We are always interested in discussing research ideas. While we have many draft ideas, we try not to impose our ideas on others. Instead, we would prefer prospective members to develop their own ideas. Based on our experience, this process has consistently worked well, particularly in helping researchers become more independent. If you have any specific research ideas and think we would be the right place for that project, please feel free to reach out. You can always email me at shawan.chowdhury@monash.edu.

We have many honours and master’s research projects available on insect migration, conservation, and citizen science. The projects are based on already available data, so we expect students to have some data synthesis and programming skills, as well as a willingness to learn. If you are interested to learn more about the potential projects, please email me.

If you are interested in doing a PhD in our lab, please follow the three points below when emailing us. Instead of just writing to join our lab, briefly explain why you are interested and how you would contribute. Similarly, instead of writing that you are interested in working on insect conservation, try to come up with a specific research idea (e.g., changes in butterfly community composition) that is aligned with your research interests. Please ONLY attach your 2-page CV (should include your transcripts (with CGPA) and cohort rank (if available)) to the email, nothing else. If you follow these three points, you will receive a non-generic response (not only from me but from any faculty member you approach).

To be eligible for the PhD scholarship, the applicants MUST possess a Bachelor’s or equivalent degree and either an Honours, Master of Science, or MPhil degree with first-class honours and at least 6 months of full-time research experience.

Considering that we are a new lab, we are not looking for postdoctoral researchers. If there is any opportunity, it will appear at the top of this page.

We are always open to collaboration, both locally and internationally. We believe a diverse team is the key to creating great science. Since 2018, we have collaborated with >150 researchers from 60 countries, many of whom are from the Global South. If you think our lab can contribute to your research in any manner, please email us at shawan.chowdhury@monash.edu.
